Scientific activities in 1996.

(1).  Reversible Optical Storage Materials: Writing with laser on polymers is 
used for the development of reversible optical storage materials (e.g. a 
compact disk which could be erased and rewritten as is a magnetic tape).  
Two series polymers and copolymers have been synthesized and their 
properties have been characterized.  These materials contain 
donor-acceptor substituted azobenzene groups bound within a polymer 
structure.  They are extremely promising for the development of the next 
generation of computers (optical computers).  The linearly polarized laser 
light induces alignment of the azoaromatic group in a direction 
perpendicalar to its plane of polarization..  The aligned region has a 
different refractive index than the random one..  Switching to circularly 
polarized laser light "erases" the alignment (information) by restoring 
disorder.

(2).  Ferroelectric Liquid Crystalline Materials:  Ferroelectric liquid 
crystals have attracted great interest for display applications.  A new series 
of ferroelectric liquid crystalline copolymers consisting of azobenzene group 
has been synthesized and characterized.  A ferroelectric liquid crystalline 
system with some novel optical properties is established.
